Asa major supplier of automobile components, Metelli S.p.A. (Cologne,Italy) designs and manufactures brake parts, engine parts, transmissioncomponents and water pumps for OEMs as well as for the aftermarket.Our R&D team has been using modeling software for adecade, but a few years ago we ran into a situation where the softwarewe had been using was inadequate. We then found that COMSOL Multiphysicscould handle the job and in the meantime, we have successfully usedCOMSOL in an increasing number of projects.
Upgrading From a 2D FEM Tool

Wefirst turned to COMSOL to study the magnetic field in an inverseelectromagnetic clutch, which works with a floating disk that isattracted by a magnetic field generated by a permanent magnet; themechanism is then disengaged through a coil. This project had producedsome prototypes designed using a 2D FEM tool. However, we felt the needfor a 3D FEM tool both to check the correctness of the simplificationsintroduced in the 2D model and to be able to manage complex 3Dgeometries. We chose COMSOL with the AC/DC Module due to good agreementbetween the model and experiment, which meant that no changes wererequired to start manufacture of the clutch pre production samples. Wesubsequently used COMSOL to examine how the magnetic field flux flowsthrough the steel parts because if this is insuffcient, there is noseparation between the parts, and the clutch wont work.
